The University of Wisconsin–Madison has been selected by the U.S. Department of State and its cooperative partner, World Learning, to host an EducationUSA Academy in summer 2019 and to become an EducationUSA Academy host institution. Five new U.S. higher education institutions were selected to join 11 returning institutions as 2019 hosts.

The EducationUSA Academy is a two- to four-week academic program that offers college preparatory content to 15- to 17-year-old students from around the world, including specialized courses in various fields, English and academic writing courses, tours of diverse college and university campuses, and cultural activities. The Academy gives international students the opportunity to become more familiar with the U.S. higher education system, academic culture, campus life, and the college admissions process. It creates a pipeline of international youth prepared to pursue higher education in the United States by providing participants with the information, skills, and experience necessary to submit strong applications for admission to U.S. colleges and universities.

“The University of Wisconsin–Madison is an ideal host for EducationUSA Academy,” says Christine Inthachith, director of International Noncredit Programs at UW–Madison Continuing Studies. “It’s a world-renowned institution with a beautiful, welcoming campus—a perfect setting for international high school students to be introduced to higher education in the United States. The goals of EducationUSA Academy are perfectly aligned with the Wisconsin Idea, the University of Wisconsin’s mission to share its unique resources for local and worldwide benefit.”

Experiential learning opportunities

UW–Madison’s EducationUSA Academy allows students to choose from either a Career Exploration or Intensive English for Academic Preparedness track. Through experiential learning opportunities with U.S. peers, researchers, faculty, and the community, they will engage in workshops, panel discussions, and volunteer projects. They will become stronger leaders, more collaborative team members, creative problem solvers, and critical thinkers.

The program will integrate students into the Madison community, taking them beyond campus to participate in festivals, field trips, and regional events. It also includes a visit to Chicago and Devil’s Lake State Park.

International education prepares students for today’s economy, developing relationships that are necessary to solve global challenges. The U.S. Department of State’s EducationUSA advising network includes more than 400 advising centers throughout the world that provide prospective international students with comprehensive information about U.S. higher education.

EducationUSA promotes all accredited U.S. colleges and universities. Basic services are free of charge, and advising centers support U.S. institutions’ international student recruitment efforts in an increasingly competitive global environment.
