This class will focus on the many principles of architecture and the steps that architects go through in the design process. One portion of the class will focus on the procedures an architect goes through, from the initial stages of meeting with a client, to the design process, to the need for communication to ensure that a project meets the needs of the client and that of the engineers responsible for construction of the structure. Students will learn how a person becomes an architect and about the different types of architecture through guest speakers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and architects from a local firm. Another portion of the class will focus on the social and cultural aspect of architecture. Students will learn how climate, location, and cultural values impact design of buildings. Lastly, students will be introduced to mathematics and social science behind architecture. Students will learn how architects use scale drawings, ratio, and proportion to create plans for buildings, as well as the reasons that certain structural elements and materials are used in the engineering of buildings. Students will be asked to observe and analyze, as well as participate in hands on activities throughout the class periods.
