Summary

Chinese, the official language of both Mainland China and Taiwan, is spoken by over 1.1 billion people worldwide. Given China’s rise as an economic and political power, and its rich cultural histories and vibrant contemporary cultures, Standard Chinese is one of the most important international languages in the world today. This course is an introduction to Chinese language and culture through an immersive exploration of some of the most famous cities in China. In the course, students will learn basic spoken Chinese helpful for travel to China, such as introductions, greeting people, asking for directions, and ordering food. They will also gain a basic knowledge of Chinese characters and writing system, become familiar with local life in a modern Chinese city and will develop functional abilities in Chinese that are useful in real-life contexts. The course is an introductory one for students with no or little experience in Chinese. It will be of interest to students interested in exploring Chinese language and culture, in further studying Chinese at the college level, or in combining the study of Chinese with the study of other academic subjects.
