Summary
Do you have a vested interest in what is right and just? Law 101 is an introduction to the law and the legal system in contemporary American society. In this course, the case study method is used to analyze individual rights as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and as interpreted by the courts. It also examines the two major branches of the law — criminal law and civil law. Students will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of law but even more importantly they will enhance critical thinking and communication skills through group discussions, games, courtroom simulations and hands-on projects. Field trips and guest speakers will introduce students to real-world experience. As a final summative activity, students act as attorneys and witnesses to face each other in a mock trial on the UW–Madison campus. Teamwork, critical thinking, communication skills and leadership are the biggest gains that this class has to offer.
Student profile
This course is a focused exposure experience in the field of law. The course is designed to give the students a broad introductory overview of the fundamental concepts in the study and practice of law. The activities throughout the course are collaboration-based.
