This course combines a broad college readiness experience with a jumpstart in analytical skills exploration to help prepare students for college success. During the course, students will hear from a variety of guest speakers, including Admissions Counselors, Career Advisors and UW experts in various fields and will have the opportunity to spend time focusing on one of two areas leading toward a final product that could be used in college applications. They may focus on Writing a College Essay or College Resume and Portfolio Building. If students choose College Essay Writing, the instructor will help students to brainstorm, develop and write an essay or personal statement that will help showcase students for admissions committees. Choosing College Resume and Portfolio Building will help students to demonstrate their creativity and willingness to work hard. A strong portfolio can show much more than numbers and statistics. Students will work on cover letters, items to include in a resume, building and presenting an online portfolio and more.
This course is designed to offer high school students the opportunity to hone the skills they need to succeed in college, learn more about college admissions, financial aid, navigating universities of all sizes, preparing for college academics and setting themselves up for future success.
