Summary

The capacity for language differentiates humans from other animals. But what is human language? In this course, you will discover how linguists approach the scientific study of human language from different perspectives. We will dive into details of specific spoken and signed languages from around the world as we explore the building blocks of language, the intersections between language and identity, and the ways in which popular beliefs about language reinforce and perpetuate social inequalities. Through an interactive curriculum, you will engage directly with UW–Madison faculty conducting research in linguistics and learn about the different types of career trajectories of students who major in linguistics in college. Join us as we examine how use of language reveals our past and present identities, helping us better understand who we are and the society in which we live.
