Professional Development

Professional Development for youth programming professionals

The UW–Madison Office of Youth Protection & Compliance offers courses for youth programming professionals such as teachers, school staff, counselors, youth group leaders, coaches, parents, and other adults who work with young people.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

This course teaches parents, caregivers, teachers, and other professionals how to help adolescents (ages 12-18) who are experiencing mental health or addiction challenges, or are in crisis. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including ADHD), and eating disorders.

Participants will learn:

  • Mental health challenges that youth often face
  • Typical adolescent development
  • A five-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations
