Program staff trainings

UW–Madison youth programs and activities require all staff, including employees, volunteers, and contractors, to complete specific trainings before working with youth. Use the links below to access online training programs and to register for courses. Role Classification in Youth Activities

Authorized Custodian The adult responsible for the operation of a youth activity or third-party youth activity and compliance with this policy. Authorized custodians are authorized to provide custodial care following completion of screening and training requirements.

Authorized Assistant Custodian An adult working or volunteering in a youth activity or third-party youth activity who has been authorized to provide custodial care following completion of screening and training requirements.

Authorized Adult An adult working or volunteering in a youth activity or third-party youth activity who has been authorized to interact with youth participants following completion of screening and training requirements but is not authorized to provide custodial care.

Guest Speaker An individual who is invited to make a presentation, conduct a demonstration, or facilitate instruction during a youth activity for a limited and defined time (such as a one-time-only basis or a scheduled presentation series), is never left alone with youth participants, and does not share personal contact information.

Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect (online)

UW–Madison employees, volunteers, and contractors who work with minors are required to follow the rules outlined in Governor’s Executive Order 54. This includes reporting cases of suspected child abuse or neglect to the proper officials.

Required: Authorized Adults (every two years), Authorized Assistant Custodian (every two years), Authorized Custodian (every two years)

Sexual Misconduct and Clery Crimes in Youth Activities: Reporting and Prevention (online)

This course combines and abbreviates elements from three other trainings: Preventing Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence at UW–Madison, Responsible Employee, and Campus Security Authority. It is required for University employees and volunteers whose duties include supervision and/or custodial care of minor(s) in a youth activity.

Required: Authorized Assistant Custodian (every year)

Responsible Employee (RE)

Authorized Custodians are considered Responsible Employees (REs) while working in a youth program. These individuals are required to report violations of the UW–Madison Policy on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence.

Campus Security Authority (CSA)

Authorized Custodians are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) while working in a youth program. These individuals are required to report certain crimes on or near the UW–Madison campus.
