For the first time since 2019, the Latino Youth Summit returns to an in-person event on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus on March 27–28.
Por primera vez desde 2019, la Cumbre de la Juventud Latina regresa a un evento en persona en el campus de la Universidad de Wisconsin–Madison del 27 al 28 de marzo.
More than 80 Latinx students from southern Wisconsin are expected to attend the free, two-day event designed to help them start planning a path to college as they prepare to transition from middle to high school. Seventh and eighth-grade students receive guidance, resources and support through culturally relevant workshops and presentations. This year’s theme, STEAM Exploration, will offer opportunities for students to explore a range of majors and career paths in STEAM fields — science, technology, engineering, art and math.
Se espera que más de 80 estudiantes latinos del sur de Wisconsin asistan al evento gratuito de dos días diseñado para ayudarlos a comenzar a planificar un camino hacia la universidad mientras se preparan para la transición de la escuela intermedia a la secundaria. Los estudiantes de séptimo y octavo grado reciben orientación, recursos y apoyo a través de talleres y presentaciones culturalmente relevantes. The Summit is offered by UW–Madison’s Badger Precollege program in partnership with other campus units, the Madison Metropolitan School District and Juntos Wisconsin. Students who identify as Latinx, are currently in 7th or 8th grade in southern Wisconsin and qualify for free or reduced lunch at their school are eligible to apply by completing the Google registration form on the Latino Youth Summit website.

“Our goal for this session is to connect students with resources in the community and at the university,” says Latino Youth Summit Program Coordinator Kate Ryan. “We want students to walk away from this conference with the tools and resources to continue to work towards their dreams for their futures.”

Making it a family affair / Haciéndolo un asunto de familia
The Latino Youth Summit is jam-packed with learning and social activities presented by UW faculty and Madison community members — from talks and workshops to student panels and scavenger hunts. Breakfast and lunch are included each day. Activities take place in multiple spaces on the UW–Madison campus so students can get an idea of what it’s like to be a college student.
La Cumbre de la Juventud Latina está repleta de actividades sociales y de aprendizaje presentadas por profesores de la UW y miembros de la comunidad de Madison, desde charlas y talleres hasta paneles de estudiantes y búsquedas del tesoro. El desayuno y el almuerzo están incluidos todos los días. Las actividades se llevan a cabo en múltiples espacios en el campus de UW–Madison para que los estudiantes puedan tener una idea de cómo es ser un estudiante universitario.
While students attend each day of the Summit on their own, organizers have added a Family Wellness Night to this year’s program. Student attendees and their families can attend the wellness event after the Summit, on the evening of Tuesday, March 28. Local community members and groups will be on hand to provide resources to support the transition from middle school to high school and college. A panel will feature parents who have already helped their students make these transitions, and students will be able to celebrate their experiences from the Summit.
Mientras los estudiantes asisten cada día de la Cumbre por su cuenta, los organizadores agregaron una Noche de Bienestar Familiar al programa de este año. Los estudiantes asistentes y sus familias pueden asistir al evento de bienestar después de la Cumbre, en la noche del martes 28 de marzo. “In addition to welcoming students back to campus for this year’s Summit, we’re most excited to interact with students and families to support their growth and learning,” says Christopher Pevey-Harry, assistant dean for Badger Precollege. “Our new Family Wellness Night offers the information and resources families can tap into to help their students reach their educational dreams.”

The event has drawn praise from previous students and families. Parents say that as a result of attending the summit, students have more interest in college, better understand the steps to preparing for and applying to college, and know better how to put the college journey into a cultural perspective.
