Latino Youth Summit
¿Quién soy yo? This spring Latino Youth Summit will commence for its 12 year of providing middle school youth in Southern Wisconsin the opportunity to celebrate Latinx identities, culture and heritage on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. Badger Precollege and Juntos Wisconsin (EN) are excited to welcome current Latinx 6th, 7th and 8th-grade students to participate in this free, three-day event. The summit strives to guide students through their transition from middle school to high school and beyond in higher education and career endeavors. This year’s theme will be Quién soy yo? The journey of discovering oneself at the intersection of age milestones and heritage. Through culturally relevant workshops and presentations, students will explore concepts of identity, college/career preparation and Latin appreciation. By connecting students to university and community resources, people and opportunities, students can continue to grow and foster their passions and dreams beyond the summit.
Eligibility and Registration Information
Who is eligible?
This summit is funded entirely by our partners to give equal access to all students and afford them the opportunity to attend. If a student identifies as a Latinx and is a current 6-8th grader in southern Wisconsin, and they qualify for free or reduced lunch at their school, they are eligible to apply. The summit is hosted for the students only and parents would not attend.
How to register
Please register via the Google Form link found here: Latino Youth Summit 2024 Registration
There are 8 sections for students and families to complete:
- Student Contact Information
- A short paragraph explaining why a student wants to participate
- Parent or Guardian Information
- Emergency Contact Information
- Student Background Information
- Conference Information
- Consent Agreement
- Summit Documents
Students and families should complete the first 7 sections on their own. However, in the last section, they will need to submit documents which include a Health Form and DPI Scholarship Form. Families should fill out the Health Form for students. The Wisconsin DPI Scholarship Form must be filled out by both families and a school administrator at the student’s school. The DPI form must be signed by schools to ensure the summit participants qualify for free or reduced lunch. Please email the form to your student’s school or drop it off in person for them to sign.
Family wellness night
Families are invited to participate with their students after the conference on Tuesday, March 26th, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. We will also invite local community members and groups to provide resources supporting the transition from middle to high school to higher education. Families will have the opportunity to partake in a meet and greet with different organizations and groups. It is our hope to host a parent panel for families to share and understand the experiences of other parents who have undergone these transitions and ask questions. Lastly, we will devote ample time to celebrate our student participants and spend time reflecting on their experiences at the summit.
Our goals
We are dedicated to the success of all of our students and their continued endeavors in higher education. It is our intention that this summit will create increased access, resources, and awareness for learners with Latinx identities. We have dedicated ourselves to a few key goals:
Support each attendee’s ambitions to attend college
Increase awareness and understanding of the college application process
Provide resources to students for further exploration after the summit concludes
Increase belief that college is an obtainable option
Show students that their community is represented in higher education at UW-Madison
Promote successful pathways in life (vocational, educational, mental and physical)
Expose Latino Youth Summit participants to additional college/ life readiness programs as well as potential scholarship/funding opportunities
I loved the workshop about getting ready for college and thinking about what career is right for you. Even though we’re young, this information is useful right now.
