Middle and high school students have a magical experience at Summer Music Clinic

The registration deadline has been extended to April 30 for the 2018 Summer Music Clinic in June. In its 89th year, the University of Wisconsin-Madison program brings together hundreds of middle and high school musicians to work with experienced educators from around the country. Students in band, chorus, jazz ensemble, musical theater, and orchestra engage with peers from other communities, participating in classes, performances, and activities.

“It doesn’t matter what your experience level is or how well you play or sing,” says Michael, who attended last year’s Summer Music Clinic. “You come here, you learn, you make new friends, you meet new people, and it’s great.”

The junior session, for grades 6-8, is June 17-23. The senior session, for grades 9-12, is June 24-29. In both sessions, campers will experience large-group learning with conductors and small-group learning led by specialists. Summer Music Clinic also employs college-age counselors to provide a caring support system, ensuring that life on the UW-Madison campus is fun, welcoming, and safe.

“At Summer Music Clinic, the campers can easily connect with new people,” says counselor Gabby Chwae. “‘You like music, I like music—we can be friends.’”

Counselor Megan Mitchell also notes the significant educational benefits: “Seeing the campers learn in a week’s time is nothing short of incredible.”

Sharing and celebrating

Along with intensive study, the Summer Music Clinic allows plenty of time for socializing with creative indoor and outdoor activities. Evenings include concerts performed by guest artists, faculty members, and fellow students. Everyone’s hard work is shared and celebrated at the end of the week with concerts for family and friends.
