
International precollege programs build skills, confidence and connections
For high schoolers across the globe, studying in the U.S. may seem like a faraway dream. Thanks to the Wisconsin International Precollege Academy (WIPA), WIPA Online and other programs for international students through UW–Madison’s Badger Precollege, that dream feels closer than ever.
These programs bring academically curious high school students together from around the world, both virtually and in person, for a summer of academic exploration, cultural exchange and personal growth. Through courses, workshops and conversations with university instructors and staff, WIPA and WIPA Online provide international students with the tool set they need to navigate the U.S. college application process while building global connections and confidence.
We spoke with four students from Mexico, Costa Rica and Macedonia who participated in WIPA or WIPA Online (formerly EducationUSA Academy and EducationUSA Academy Connects) in 2024. Here’s what they had to say about their experiences.
From a dream to reality
“Since I was 6 years old, I’ve dreamed of studying in the U.S.,” said Elias Peranza Robles of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico. A math enthusiast and fan of video games, Elias saw WIPA Online as a chance to make that dream more tangible. “The program gave me more confidence to apply to top universities in the U.S., for instance, UW–Madison.”
Magdalena Mucheva, from Strumica, North Macedonia, was drawn to the program through her passion for both STEM and the arts, with her favorite mathematical discipline being geometry and her favorite composer Thaikovsky. “I joined the program to broaden my knowledge and gain skills for succeeding in the college application process,” she shared.
For students like Fernanda Aguilar Lasso, from Mexico, who attended the in-person WIPA program, the opportunity to live on campus was life-changing. “Living on the UW campus gave me insight into the daily life of college students, from dining halls to dorms,” she said. “It made me feel independent and more confident about my future.”
Learning beyond the classroom
The students not only valued the academically enriching environment of WIPA, but also their personal growth.
“The program helped me improve my public speaking, writing and communication skills,” Magdalena said. “It also shifted my perspective by introducing me to peers from every corner of the world with different lives but similar dreams.”
Jimena Vasquez, from Costa Rica, appreciated learning more about life in Madison. “I didn’t really know about it, so it was super cool to learn about that part of the country,” she said. “It helped me trust myself and grow as a person.”
Building community across borders
Whether online or in person, the students found that the programs fostered meaningful and lasting connections. Elias appreciated the small group breakout rooms, where 3-4 students would work with a counselor. “It created a more interactive environment, allowing us to ask questions and connect more deeply,” he said.
“Collaborating on projects despite being miles apart and sharing secrets even though we’ve never met was a surreal experience,” added Magdalena.
Fernanda’s favorite part of the program was the people. “From the UW staff, our teachers and RAs to all the friends I made, I got a lot from each one of them. They really helped me become more brave, persistent and secure.”
Adjusting to a new environment can be challenging, but students say the experience helped them grow. “Being away from home was hard,” said Fernanda, “but it helped me become more independent and prepared for what’s next as a student.”
For students not planning to attend college in the U.S., Elias emphasized that the program is a great way to develop skills and explore future career paths. Fernanda added, “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. There will always be people ready to help. Be yourself and enjoy the experience.”
Jimena put it simply: “Try to live your life there and enjoy!”
Would they recommend it?
The answer was a resounding yes. “I would definitely recommend this program to everyone I know. It was one of the best experiences I had during my teenage years,” said Fernanda.
Magdalena agreed, saying, “It was a fun and transformative experience, especially for international students who may not be able to attend in-person programs.”
Badger Precollege offers academic summer programming for domestic and international students in grades 2–12. International high school students are eligible to enroll in the following programs:
Wisconsin International Precollege Academy (WIPA)
A month-long in-person summer program that helps students explore campus life and develop the skills necessary for success at a U.S. university. Students also participate in excursions and community outreach activities that sample the culture, traditions and values of the Midwest.
Wisconsin International Precollege Academy Online (WIPA Online)
A month-long virtual version of the in-person WIPA program, with students from around the world. Utilizing the university’s online tools, WIPA Online helps students be ready to make a more informed decision about where and what they want to study in the future.
Social Impact Leadership Online
A virtual summer course that brings together international and U.S. students to collaborate on projects addressing global challenges. Learn about leadership, innovation and creating change — all while making friends around the world.
