Summary

In this laboratory-intensive course, you will learn how DNA and proteins are analyzed to improve food products, diagnose a disease, or identify a suspect at a crime scene. You will gain valuable laboratory skills and experimentation experience such as micropipetting, gel electrophoresis, bacterial transformation, DNA extraction and protein analysis.

Student profile

This is a laboratory-based course with class lab work, demonstrations, research, reading and class discussion. Students will keep a laboratory notebook of all activities and research. This scientific notebook/binder will be used to evaluate your comprehension and progress. Students will design and evaluate experiments in the major areas of biotechnology. Assessment will be based on laboratory skill mastery, critical thinking skills and collaborative group work and leadership. Field trips and speakers have included a visit to the Primate Lab, a tour of the Center for Dairy Research (CDR) and a trip to the Biotechnology Building.
