Summary

Have you ever been sitting in class and wondered, "When will I ever use this in the real world?". In this class focusing on Organic Chemistry, you will explore real-world applications of the material that you are learning. From understanding the chemical reactions that give flavors to the foods we love, to the science behind preserving freshness, you'll gain a profound appreciation for the role of chemistry in the food industry. Students will learn about departments like UW–Madison's Animal and Dairy Science Department which has been a leader in dairy research for over 100 years. Students will take field trips to UW–Madison's facilities and labs, and meet professors and students who are currently doing research in the field. This class will cover a range of chemistry topics that are relevant to understanding the chemical composition, reactions and processes involved in food production, preservation and quality control.
