Summary

Chemistry is everywhere. Considering Everyday Chemistry is a chemistry enrichment course designed to expose upper elementary grade students to a brief few of the myriad manifestations of chemistry in the world around us. Through qualitative labs, short readings, short discussions, kinesthetic role plays, and a small research and presentation assignment, students will see how many of the big things they do each day are affected by chemistry. The purpose of the class is to introduce students to the study of chemistry and simple chemistry lab techniques. This hands-on, lab-based class will help you scientifically explain your chemical successes and disasters. The class will provide a basis for understanding core differences between chemicals, and reveal basic principles involving energy transfer, diffusion. You will be challenged to think of your own chemistry-related scientific question and test your hypotheses in practical labs. With units in chemistry and common chemical reactions, students will be left with an overview of how chemistry influences their everyday life.
